Thanks for stopping by! We were a family of three, until we added one more (cat, that is), making us a family of four. In 2012, we added four more...one husband, two girls, and a dog. We have a full plate as a party of eight!

Adoption, blended families, pets, school, running...it's all here. Pull up a chair and read a while. After you do, please leave a little comment love! It makes me happy...and y'all know...if Momma is happy, then everyone is happy...at least at our house!

Animal Adventures!

Late last week Gloria and I took off for Florida--
Specifically, the beach--
Namely Vero Beach.

I have been going to Vero (and staying at the same place) since I was 10 years old.
That's a long time...
A really long time...
Like, well, I'm not sayin' how many years...

I love it down there.
And we were going to get to spend a long weekend with my nieces, Reiny and Ashlyn.
And my mom.
Which meant a long weekend for Gloria with her cousins.
And her grandmother.

I figured I would take some pictures of the girls on the beach....
I think I managed precisely TWO of those.

Because the animal life on this trip...
Oh. My. Goodness. Gracious.

That's all I can think to say.

It started with this at a rest area in Florida...
Needless to say, we didn't stay there too long!

That afternoon while Gloria was happily playing on the beach with her cousins and my mom, I went for a walk on the beach.  The theme for this walk turned out to be birds...

A flock of pelicans kept circling and landing and floating
Circling and landing and floating
Circling and landing and floating...

OK, so the sand crab isn't a bird, but blogger isn't cooperating and I can't get it to move.
This guy was playing peek-a-boo with me from behind his protective barrier of sea weed.

This bird was walking up and down the beach in the surf, definitely on the hunt for dinner...

Only dinner was too big for him to handle...
(I threw this one back in the ocean since he was still flopping around on the sand)

Speaking of dinner, this lizard came to check out our dinner one evening when we were eating outside. He seemed intrigued, but never got too close.

On our last morning there, I got up at 6:30 to be on the beach for sunrise.
I took lots of pictures of the sun as it came up over the horizon.
It was gorgeous!
But then as I was walking back down the beach towards our motel, I encountered this...

 Yep, a shark.
And no, I did not throw him back.
Someone else did.
But he kept swimming back up and getting beached.
On the third toss he did finally swim back out in the ocean.
(I think I was glad we were not planning to swim that morning!  This would have cancelled those plans for sure!)

When I arrived back at the motel and walked into my mom's room, this next creature was pointed out to me.  I maintained my composure even though every fiber of my being wanted to run, SCREAMING, from the room.  But I didn't.  Instead, I snapped a picture and then informed everyone that I would be in MY room if I was needed for anything.

 That thing was GI-normous!!!  UGH!!

Then, that afternoon on our drive home, Gloria and I had stopped at another rest area....this time in South Carolina.  As I got out of my car and looked across the parking lot, this...
peered out of the door of his trailer.
Guess he just wanted to say hello and get a breath of fresh air before continuing on his journey.

I certainly had more than my fair share of animal adventures over the course of four days!
I was glad to find that Hannah, Screamer, and Cookie were the only animals residing at my house upon my return!

Six Months Ago Today...I Sent an Email

This post could also be titled "How We Met, For the Inquiring Minds That Want to Know"

Late last fall I joined an online dating site. It was with great skepticism that I created my profile and paid the membership fee. I really didn't know what to expect, much less how to navigate dating if/when the opportunity arose.

Fast forward through three or four months of wading through many "daily matches," a few email exchanges, one phone conversation, and quite a few profiles I couldn't click "not interested" fast enough and it was the evening of February 3rd--6 months ago today.

Worn out from a long week at school and a long evening of getting Gloria's science fair project checked in and set up at the university, I sat down at my computer and logged in to see who might be in my daily matches.

Daily match # 1:  Not interested
Daily match #2: Not interested
Daily match #3: NOT interested!!!

Insert appropriate eye rolling and sighing and shaking of head here...why exactly was I putting myself through this?!?

One more to go and then I was staying off for the weekend. I had the science fair, church, Gloria's birthday, and a Super Bowl party to keep me busy.

Daily match #4:  Angelsfan2000...
My thoughts went something like this...

He's nice looking. "My glass is half full"....ok, that's a nice sentiment. Lives not too far away...that's good. 43 years old...close in age. Two daughters...so he gets the whole parenting thing. 5'8"...we'd see eye to eye. We have some common interests...good. Except wait...NASCAR? Oh dear. But maybe I should let that one slide. He sounds on otherwise.

And so I sent a quick message--something light and silly about the glass definitely being half full, especially since it was a Friday, and wishing him a happy weekend.

And that was that.

Or so I thought.

Because a few hours later, Angelsfan2000 sent me a reply.

That set off a series of messages back and forth between us over the next two days. All was casual and light. Chatty. Easy.

Sunday evening while I was at a Super Bowl party I got another email containing his latest message suggesting I text him during the game. I chose to pretend I didn't get that message until after I got home later that night. Never mind the fact that I certainly wasn't going to text first!!  So I sent him my number and suggested a round of Twenty Questions.

Not long after that, the text alert on my phone sounded and the game was on. Questions and answers and more questions and more answers. Two hours later, it was past midnight and although many questions had been asked and answered, we were not yet at twenty.

The next evening we picked up where we left off. As we neared our twentieth question, Brian asked what happened next--which led to our first phone call on Tuesday night followed by our first date the following Saturday, February 11th.

At the end of that date, we had a plan. We'd take things slow, see each other when we could, and see where things went.

Plan?
Did I say plan?

We laugh about that now because nothing went according to our plan.

On March 3rd, one month after that first message, Brian asked me to marry him.

And I said yes.

And here we are...
Planning a wedding
Planning our future
Planning the rest of our lives together.

And that's a plan we can stick with!

Is the glass half full?

No.
It isn't.

It's filled to overflowing.

And life is good.

This is a Test

And only a test.

I'm trying to see if I can post from my phone.

Guess I'm about to find out!!

Four Months to Go...Wedding Planning Update

I was reading over a post from the end of April...what we had accomplished and what was left to do.  Thought I'd update anyone who was curious...

What Have We Accomplished?

  • wedding date:  four months from today!
  • church
  • NEW reception location and caterer:  The caterer we had was nuts and we weren't getting what we needed or wanted from her.  So we found a new venue for our reception since we couldn't use another caterer at the original location.  We are so excited about where it will be!
  • my dress
  • dresses for three girls
  • A photographer (who I am really excited about) is booked.
  • A cake has been designed!  That was a fun evening this past weekend.  And we left with a sketch of OUR cake!
  • Invitations are purchased and ready to print. (We opted for a D-I-Y invitation.)
  • Address list for invitations is almost finished
  • DJ for the reception is booked.

Still to Do?

  • Flowers
  • Decorations for the reception
  • The menu for the reception:  The caterer uses locally grown ingredients, so we won't do this until closer to December 1st.
  • Print, address, and mail the invitations
  • Registry
  • Service music (but we have an appointment scheduled with the organist this month)
What am I forgetting???

The funny thing is that everyone says it is so hard to plan a wedding.  Many friends told me that planning a wedding in nine months couldn't be done, but this hasn't really been that hard or stressful.

Well, except for the crazy caterer that we cancelled on.  ;)

Other than that, it's been pretty smooth and I've been pretty calm...I think...I'm sure Brian will tell me if that's not a true assessment!
