Trying Again

Last year, Gloria got her ears pierced for her birthday. As it turned out, she was allergic to the 14K gold. She was so sad to have to take out her earrings and let the holes close up.

Recently, she has been talking about wanting to try again, this time with a different kind of metal post. This afternoon we were at the mall and she decided that she really did want to try having pierced ears again. So we made our way into the accessories store that also does ear piercing. They had some non-gold, hypoallergenic stud options and Gloria decided on the "crystal rose" pair. Was she ever giggle-y as she climbed up in the chair! I know it was her nervous giggle. She took a deep breath and scrunched her eyes closed while the first ear was done. The same process was repeated for the other ear. And now she has little pink earrings in her ears. As we were walking to the car, I asked her how she was feeling. "My stomach was turning somersaults," was her reply. "But I'm happy we're trying again."

That's Not What I Want to Be!

This afternoon, Gloria and I were headed to the Y. Somehow we got on the topic of what she wants to be when she grows up. The usual list...a teacher, a writer, an artist. I reminded her that she has also mentioned being a veterinarian. The conversation that followed went something like this:

G: You mean a vet.
M: That what I said. A veterinarian.
G: No! A vet. Not someone who only eats vegetables. That's not a job!
M: (laughing, which of course got me in trouble) No. You're right. Eating vegetables is not a job. But I think you mean a vegetarian.
G: (indignant because I was laughing) Well how was I supposed to know? They sound almost the same!

I Had to Scream!

I had one more batch of blueberry muffins to make. And then I walked into the kitchen to find this...

I'm beginning to wonder if he was named Screamer because of the way he "screams" instead of meowing or because of the way he makes me scream when I catch him doing something bad. (which is most of the time unless he is sleeping) I recently apologized to Hannah Cat for ever calling her "bad." Screamer makes HC look like the most perfect cat in the world!

Winter Weather's been a while since I last blogged. Guess I've been kind of bogged down with the day to day stuff that happens in life.

We had some snowy, icy, cold, wet weather over the weekend. The first snowflakes fell late on Friday afternoon. Gloria was so excited. She put on her coat and went outside where she planted herself on the patio swing. She leaned back with her face to the sky and her mouth wide open, trying to catch the flakes in her mouth as they fell. She was giddy with excitement over the snow. She didn't care that it was cold and wet...just happy to see snow again. I wish I had a picture, but my digital camera battery needed to be charged and my "real" camera was upstairs out of reach. :(

Saturday morning, everything was blanketed in white--a mix of snow and sleet--but it was a lot less than predicted. Nonetheless, we bundled up and headed outside to play. There wasn't much to play in, but G was content to shove all the snow into a pile on the hood of my car and call it her snow fort. Then she picked icicles off of my car and anywhere else she could find them and planted them in the snow fort where they would be "safe." Hot chocolate was called for when I finally convinced her to go inside. We went out again, but it had gotten much colder and things were more solid than earlier, so it didn't last long.

Sunday morning, I knew I wasn't going to venture out on the roads. That meant we missed church (Sunday school was canceled) and a birthday party, but we were warm and dry and safe. I have no desire to attempt driving on icy, snowy roads. When we went outside that afternoon, we discovered animal tracks in the snow behind our house--lots of birds had left their footprints on the patio and we also found cat prints, raccoon prints, and deer prints! That was probably the highlight of our "winter storm."

Sunday night brought news of schools being closed--hers and mine--for today. I opted out of the "optional teacher workday" and after our neighborhood seemed to be melted enough, we took off to run errands and do some birthday party preparations. I don't know how I would have gotten it all done if I hadn't had the day off!

Now we are waiting to see what tomorrow will bring...freezing rain, like they are forecasting? Or just rain? And we are anxiously watching the forecast develop for Friday. Friday is an important's Gloria's birthday and we are having a slumber party! So, let's keep that predicted storm at bay for an extra day!
